| Al and Tryan Morton and Clare Gilbertson look over the plan for the saving of the Salton Sea at the Salton Sea Visitors Center. |
Friday, after enjoying a wonderful potluck breakfast, a group of us took off to further discover the area. We were led by Joe and Naomi Kessler who were guests for the weekend. On our itinerary were the mudpots (which for some reason weren't very active that day), the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Preserve (where we spotted some skimmers that Tryna and Clare insisted were desert penguins), Sanctuary Mountain (some man's colorful vision of religious folk art), and Slab City (snowbird mecca of the desert). We returned to camp for a soak and then a soup and sandwich potluck.
Saturday morning a delicious breakfast buffet was served followed by a lively business meeting. After an 'each one teach one' computer class, a group of hearty hikers took off to explore the area around the campground - Found: many mineral spring wells; Lost: Al Morton's reading glasses. An Italian dinner provided by wagonmasters Marge Morrison and Tryna and Al Morton culminated with an 80th birthday celebration for guest Joe Kessler. Saturday evening found the whole group playing nickel card bingo where Lorraine and Pauline won more than their share of games! Some people have all the luck.
After the traditional Sunday morning rolls, juice and coffee, Hilde, Clare, David and Al decided to retrace the hike in an attempt to find the lost glasses. Just a little bit out of the campground, eagle eyes David spotted the wandering specs hanging from a bush. We were all able head to our next destination knowing that Al could once again read.
